The Rise of Non-Traditional Engagement Rings

Posted on

We have all heard the saying: 'Diamonds are a girl's best friend', but in 2018, is this now a little old-fashioned? After all, the song was famously sung by the beautiful Marilyn Monroe in the movie, 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' way back in 1953. Times have changed a lot since then and even though diamonds remain one of the most beautiful gemstones, they are not as highly prized as they used to be. Perhaps this is why there has been an increase in the brides-to-be, choosing non-traditional engagement rings.

Thinking about a non-traditional engagement ring?

Why Non-Traditional Engagement Rings?

Even just a generation ago, a wedding and everything associated with a wedding, was all about tradition - An ivory dress, a church wedding, and a diamond engagement ring. But, things have changed, weddings in the 21st century are all about the non-traditional. Couples are doing things their own way to make their weddings a unique, one-of-a-kind experience. Traditional veils are being replaced by the likes of floral crowns, the traditional wedding suit is being replaced by sharp contemporary tailoring when it comes to venue, anything goes, and diamonds are being shunned in favour of the non-traditional engagement ring.

Ever since Kate Middleton unveiled her sapphire engagement ring, once worn by Princess Diana, in late 2010, there has been an increase in those wanting a non-traditional engagement ring. Once considered out of the box thinking, non-traditional gemstones are now a popular choice for engagement rings. Popular stones of the moment include Morganite, thanks to its beautifully romantic rose hue, and ruby thanks to the likes of Victoria Beckham and Ashley Simpson, choosing the rich red stone, for their non-traditional engagement rings. Interesting fact, Victoria Beckham has 13 engagement rings, I think the emerald stunner is my favourite of them all; it is somehow both non-traditional and classically chic.

Semi-Precious Engagement Ring - Open Ring in Gold

Diamonds can be costly, but by choosing a non-traditional stone, you can significantly reduce the cost of your engagement ring. After all, the ring is supposed to symbolise the love between two people, it means so much more than the price you pay for it. When you chose a non-traditional gemstone, many more rings become an option for you. You can choose a colour and a design that really means something to you – a favourite colour, a birthstone, or even an unusual setting, you wouldn't usually get with diamond rings.

Your Engagement Ring, Your Choice

If you really want to be non-traditional, you don't have to choose a stone for your engagement ring at all. If you prefer a simple design aesthetic, with no opulent details, then there is no reason you cant choose a precious metal ring in a minimal style. If you can get married by Elvis or Yoda, in a tiny chapel in Las Vegas, you can have an engagement ring without a gemstone.

Minimal Engagement Ring - Arco Ring in Silver

When you choose an engagement ring, you are choosing something that you intend to wear for the rest of your life. There is no point in choosing a diamond ring that you don't love, just because of tradition. It could be a £5 ring bought in a charity store that speaks to you or something with a unique design aesthetic and non-traditional stone that you fall in love with. It is your ring, your choice.
